As winter approaches, many mountain roads close until late spring. If you plan on hiking in Banff and Kananaskis in the off season, check for seasonal road closures before you go!

Kananaskis Annual Road Closures
Road Name – Section(s): Closure Dates
- Bow Valley Park Road – West of Middle Lake: mid-October – April 30
- Forestry Trunk Road / Hwy #940 – South of Cataract Creek & northwest of Plateau Mountain Road: December 1 – April 30
- Highway #532 – Between Highway #22 & Highway #940: December 1 – April 30
- McLean Creek Road – South of McLean Staging Access Road, north of Fisher Creek: December 1 – April 30
- Powderface Road: December 1 – May 14
- Moose Mountain Road: December 1 – May 14
- Highway #40 – King Creek to Highwood House Junction: December 1 – June 14
- Highway #66 – West of Elbow Falls & Powderface Trail: December 1 – June 14
- Highway #546 / Sheep River Road – West of Sandy McNabb Campground: December 1 – June 14
Notes: Gorge Creek Road is permanently closed.

Banff National Park Annual Road Closures
Road Name – Section(s): Closure Dates
- Moraine Lake Road: mid October – May 31, 2023/early June (weather dependent)
- Bow Valley Parkway / Highway 1A (east of Johnston Canyon): May 1 – June 25 & September 1-30
- Minnewanka Loop Road – West section: November 1 – May 1
- Fairmont Banff Springs Golf Course Road: November 1 – May 1

Note: Yoho Valley Road (to Takkakaw Falls) in Yoho National Park is closed from mid-October to mid-June each year. See Parks Canada | Yoho National Park Hours of Operation for details.

Spring biking beyond the winter gates
For an amazing experience, bike past the winter gates on these roads before they open to vehicle traffic in the spring:
- Biking Hwy 66 from Elbow Falls to Forget-me-not Pond
- Biking Sheep River Road (Highway 546) from Sandy McNabb Campground to Sheep River Falls
- Bike Highway 40 & Hike to Cat Creek Falls
- Biking the Bow Valley Parkway from Banff to Johnston Canyon
