“There ain’t no party like a kitchen party!” Join the fun at Alberta Theatre Projects.
Alberta Kitchen Party is cooking up good times with good tunes. From our seats on the floor, we feel like we’re at a best friend’s jam session, grooving to the beat when someone breaks into song. What begins as a Welcome Home party for Jeremy Carver-James, turns into an inner journey of sorts. Through mashups, solos, and candid stories, the characters reveal how they ended up where they are today; and challenges they faced along the way: from parents who disapprove of acting as a career, to coming out as gay.
The tone is decidedly light and just what we need two years into the pandemic when we can’t even remember the last time we had a house party. Whether it’s a mashup, Canadian classic like Joni Mitchell’s “Big Yellow Taxi”, or original tune like “Coming Home,” songs are delivered beautifully with energy. When Anna Dalgleish talks about not knowing where her next paycheque will come from, Alanis Morissette’s “Hand in my Pocket” (“I’m broke but I’m pretty”) is the perfect segue.
If you’re looking for a fun night on the town, head to Alberta Kitchen Party!
