How to make the most of a mini-getaway to Wainwright.
Looking out across the Battle River Valley, the prairie looks very much like it did over a century ago when the Battle River Trestle was first built. With cows and calves grazing nearby, it’s an idyllic scene. We’re about 15 minutes outside the town of Wainwright, a small town with a lot of heart.
Partnership: This story was written in partnership with Go East of Edmonton, but all words and opinions are my own.
Known as the Buffalo Capital of Canada, for its role in preserving the plains bison, Wainwright is a vibrant community with a charming historic downtown, recreational opportunities, and friendly people. Visit the resident bison herd at the Bud Cotton Bison Paddock, or check out the 10 foot high Buffalo Statue at Buffalo Park. Explore Main Street and the town’s parks, then play a round of golf or mini golf at one of the many golf courses in the area.
Our favorite moments on our overnight trip to Wainwright were playing mini golf at Riverdale Mini-Park, shopping and dining on Main Street (find all your favorite candies at Dobbin’s), and cooling off at the splash park. Morales Mexican Grill has delicious, authentic tacos; and The Honey Pot Eatery & Pub has homemade goodness (try the lasagna or steak!) with no trans fat or MSG.
