Itโs the last long weekend of summer. Letโs make it count! Here are my top 10 things to do in Calgary area for September long weekend.
- Play Pokemon Go! Pokemon are often found at city landmarks. Explore theseย landmarks in Calgary parksย and hunt for Pokemon at the same time! We had a lot of luck on the Bow River Pathway from Edworthy Park to the Calgary Zoo.
- Donโt have data? You can get 500 MB free data at the Calgary Zoo (from ShawGo Wifi) and there are tons of PokeStops and pokemon to catch.
- Banff Central Park is also a fun place to play with several Pokestops!
- Calgary Playground Review has some great tips on playing Pokemon Go in Calgary.

- Escape the rain at Bow Habitat Station, home to the Livingston Fish Hatchery and a great Discovery Centre. Feed thousands of fish, watch short films, and try the hands-on displays.
Exhibit at Bow Habitat Station - Explore Inglewood by Bike! Explore Pearce Estate Park, visit the River Passage Art Installation, then ride to Nellie Breen Playground.
River Passage Art Installation - Try milky way and star photography. September 1st was the new moon, so the skies are still very dark.
Starry Night at Fish Lake Campground - Take some Awesome Autumn Walks, Hikes, and Bike Rides! This Calgaryโs Child article by yours truly tells you where to go for fall colors and family fun. The aspens and larches are beginning to turn so this weekend should have some color. I expect colors to peak mid-September this year.
Glenbow Ranch Provincial Park in Fall - Take a bear-free roadtrip to SE Alberta. Now that itโs cooler, you can enjoy the trails more and all these trips have no bears! **There is a mosquito advisory for Dinosaur Provincial Park, so hold off on visiting until October.**
Cypress Hills Provincial Park - Tour the Icefields Parkway! September is far less busy than July and August! If you donโt have time to drive to Jasper, at least go to Peyto Lake โ itโs such a rewarding, short hike!!
Peyto Lake, Banff National Park - Squeeze in one more beach day! Although the weekend is calling for cooler temperatures, itโs still fun to be by water and build sand castles. Check out this post for beaches in and around Calgary. Sikome Lake is open until September 5th (note: user fees in effect). **The Elbow River โbeachโ near 25 Ave SW is closed due to fecal coliform (yuck).**
Sikome Lake, Fish Creek Provincial Park - Go somewhere new! The David Thompson Corridor (Hwy 11 from Saskatchewan Crossing to Rocky Mountain House) is a beautiful area to explore. While youโre there, hike to Siffleur Falls, thenย visit Crescent Falls and Windy Point!
Windy Point, Abraham Lake - Hike Prairie Mountain. The Elbow Valley area of Kananaskis has had less bear warnings than others, but be sure to follow these bear safety tips just in case.

As always, please check parks advisories before heading out and be sure to pack all the daytrip essentials.
