It’s late August, but Castle Mountain Resort is a hub of activity. Castle’s annual Huckleberry Festival is in full swing with live music, a pop-up market, face painting, a bouncy house, food trucks, guided hikes, beer garden, and of course, berry picking. For just two days each summer, the Huckleberry Chair takes berry lovers up Haig Mountain to prime berry patches.
As we wait in line for the chairlift, buckets in hand, we get hugs from Marie Cameron, the hugging liftie, who has worked at Castle for over 10 years. Cameron isn’t the only one who returns to Castle year after year. Several festival-goers tell us “Huck Fest” is a family tradition and chance to re-connect with their winter ski buddies.

At the top of the lift, we enjoy the view and start hunting for huckleberries. They are easy to find if you know what you’re looking for. The girls make short work of one berry patch and move on to another bush full of sun ripened, sweet huckleberries. We feed like bears until lunchtime, then head down the mountain for burgers and live music (meals are included in All Access Passes).
With a full calendar of events from Friday to Sunday, there’s fun for all ages (beer tasting, anyone?) all day long, but you should save time to do at least one hike while you’re in the area. Register for Friday night’s guided full moon hike and fine dining event, or take a detour to Haig Lake on your way back to the lodge. It’s a short hike to the beautiful little lake.
Bring a bucket and I’ll see you there!
